Edgard Gouveia Jr isa Brazilian architect and urban planner who has been active in innovativesocial change for the past 20 years. His current project is the creation ofPlayTheCall, a visionary Global Game that aims to gameify socialactivism, using open source technology to network the best energies and initiativesof two billion people to save the planet in a methodology that is fast, freeand fun. Edgard is bringing his warmth and enthusiasm to northern Californiathis week. He is excited to create synergy with like-minded visionaries in theBay Area!

As part of GenUp’sCore Team, Piya Banerjee manages communications & web, fundraising, and staff teamhealth & empowerment; and contributes in the areas of strategicplanning, program development, and community engagement. Piya graduatedwith a B.A. in Finance and International Business from the University ofWashington. She has worked a variety of positions post-graduationincluding Management Consultant, GMAT Instructor, and Public Relations andDevelopment Manager for an education-based non-profit in Hyderabad, India. Sheis also a lifelong student of human development, yoga, and music and is excitedto embody all aspects of herself in her work with GenUp.

Tom Dawkins isco-founder of StartSomeGood.com, a peerfunding platform for social changeinitiatives that reduces barriers for emerging social entrepreneurs to raisefunds and grow a community of supporters. Tom founded Vibewire Youth Mediaand Arts Inc. creating expression opportunities for young Australians throughmedia, arts and technology. Vibewire has received several internationalawards including the NSW Non-Profit Microbusiness of the Year at the UN’s WorldSummit on the Information Society. Tom is a recipient of the FutureSummit Leadership Award at the Future Summit and a Global YouthActionNetFellowship from the International Youth Foundation. In April2008 Tom moved on from Vibewire and spent time traveling before beingappointed Digital Marketing Strategist and Social Media Director at Ashokautilizing social technologies to inspire people to become changemakers. In2010 Tom moved to San Francisco where he worked as a Senior SocialMedia Consultant for Small Act and as Manager of Communications and EmergingMedia at HopeLab, an Omidyar Network organization.

Antonio Aguilera isfacilitating the participatory production of Crowd4all,a crowdsourcing app that connects economically underserved people tonew work opportunities distributed online. Antonio is former Chief SocialEnterprise Officer at Community Vocational Enterprises in San Francisco, wherehe directed 3 social enterprises that help people with mental healthdisabilities get jobs: a staffing agency, a janitorial service, and 3 coffeeshops. In Mexico, Antonio launched a VoIP company to help people living withHIV get healthcare access through employment. He has experience in providingtech solutions for organizations in the United States, Mexico, Canada, andGermany. Antonio is a passionate thinker and doer of business and technologyfor the common good.

The wall separating purpose from profit is a thing of the past, asentrepreneurs and investors build newer, more nuanced organizational models combiningsocial impact with market mechanisms and returns.

Social entrepreneurs and their financial supporters – including socialinvestors, foundations, and philanthropists – face a dizzying array of choices.Whether, for instance, to operate as a nonprofit, a benefit corporation, anL3C, or a flexible purpose corporation; or whether to fund through a grant, aloan, or one of dozens of investment options. These are just some of the possibilities available to those seeking to create socialimpact.

Our panel of experts from across the fields of law, philanthropy, impactinvesting, and social business, will address key considerations that socialentrepreneurs, funders, and investors must take into account when makingdecisions about how best to pursue social impact, including:

Paul Lamb (former SEA\SFBay Board Member): As thePrincipal of Man On A Mission Consulting, Paul Lamb delivers over 20 years ofexperience as a nonprofit executive and entrepreneur, engaging everyone fromgang members to CEOs. Paul is an innovative, results-oriented leader withproven success in building organizations, businesses, and social ventures fromthe ground up. In addition to his years of experience in project management andstrategic planning, Paul is also an active public speaker and writesfrequently on emerging technology, innovative nonprofits, and socialenterprise.

PANELISTS

Paula Goldman is the Director of Omidyar Network, a philanthropic investment firm creating opportunity for people to improve their lives by investing in market-based efforts that catalyze economic, social, and political change. In her role, Paula develops cross-sector partnerships, intellectual capital, and communication strategies to drive the firm’s philanthropic goals. Previously, Paula was the founder and director of Imagining Ourselves, an award-winning global project through San Francisco’s International Museum of Women that encouraged young women to create positive change in their communities. Earlier, Paula helped manage a variety of social enterprises, including reconstruction work in post-war Bosnia and developing rural education institutions in India. Paula contributes thought pieces on social innovation to outlets such as Huffington Post and Financial Times, and has taught courses on social entrepreneurship and social movements as a faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley. Paula received a PhD from Harvard University and earned an MA in public affairs from Princeton University and a BA in political economy from the University of California, Berkeley.

David Levitt (current SEA\SFBay Board Member): David Levitt is a Principal at the law firm Adler & Colvin, which provides legal services and support to the nonprofit and philanthropic sector in the U.S. David’s practice focuses on the representation of nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations, with an emphasis on program-related investments, political advocacy, and nonprofit corporate governance. Before joining Adler & Colvin, he practiced as a corporate attorney, focusing in the areas of corporate and transactional law. David served as Secretary of the Exempt Organizations Committee of the American Bar Association Tax Section from 2003 to 2005. Currently he is Co-Chair of the Subcommittee on Intermediate Sanctions of the Exempt Organizations Committee and serves as Secretary and Vice Chair of the San Francisco Chapter of the Social Enterprise Alliance. David has served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of San Francisco, teaching a nonprofit legal issues course in the College of Professional Studies.

Dan Crisafulli: Dan Crisafulli is Managing Director of Potrero ImpactAdvisors, which provides tailored services to foundations, family offices andother entities that wish to deploy resources toward positive social andenvironmental outcomes. Dan created Potrero Impact Advisors in October 2010,building on a long career as an early stage investor focused on emergingmarkets. Previously, he served as director of investments at the SkollFoundation, which he joined in 2007. Dan led Skoll’s work in impactinvesting, including direct and fund investments, and he played a key role increating partnerships to advance the field of social entrepreneurship. In 2000,Dan cofounded the technology venture capital group at the International FinanceCorporation (IFC), where he invested in technology companies with socialimpact. Dan has also managed the Development Marketplace (DM), the World Bank’ssocial entrepreneurship and innovation program, leading its expansion from a$3.5 million to a $10 million annual program. He serves as director of RootCapital, a social investment fund based in Cambridge, MA and has served inleadership roles in community organizations in San Francisco and Washington,DC.

ShivaniSiroya: Shivani Siroya is the CEO& Founder of InVenture. InVenture unlocks access to affordable capitalto half a billion people, using mobile accounting and a proven financing model.InVenture is currently working in India and the U.S. Shivani has a widearray of professional experiences in global health, microfinance, andinvestment banking. Prior to InVenture she worked health costing at UNFPA andMergers & Acquisitions at Citigroup. She is also 2011 Echoing GreenFellow and 2011 Unreasonable Institute Fellow. Shivani holds a M.P.Hin Health Economics and Policy from Columbia University and a B.A. inInternational Relations from Wesleyan University.

Who is Jed Emerson?
Jed Emerson has a long history in the field of social enterprise and impact investing, all of which started right here in the Bay Area. He was founding director of both the Larkin Street Youth Center and REDF; has held faculty appointments at Harvard and Stanford Business Schools, and a visiting fellowship at Oxford’s Said Business School. Established in 2009, the SEA San Francisco Bay Area Chapter helps to accelerate social innovation and spur the emergence of a robust support system for social enterprise in the Bay Area. Nominations are now open for the SEA S.F. Bay Area Chapter's 2011-2012 board of directors! The current board members and officers will be completing their terms of service at the end of 2010. We'll be electing new directors and officers at our membership meeting this coming October from a slate of candidates recommended by the current board or proposed by the chapter's membership.

Members are invited at this time to nominate a candidate for the board, or volunteer to serve yourself. Serving as a board member allows you to network with your peers, support Bay Area social enterprise practitioners, and help to define and build the field of social enterprise. Here are the requirements to serve as a board member or officer:

Maintain an active membership in SEA and live or work in the S.F. Bay Area. (Membership in the chapter is automatically included in your SEA membership.)
Be actively engaged in social enterprise as a practitioner, advisor, or currently-enrolled student.
Contribute 4-8 hours of time per month to chapter activities (more for officers and committee chairs; less for board members at large).
Attend one board meeting per month (meetings are in person every 3rd month; others are via teleconference).
Actively serve on one standing committee of the chapter (e.g. Program or Membership).

The following current board members plan to seek re-election for the terms listed, and are being recommended by the board:

SEA Summit Attendees from all over the world attended the SEA Summit Showcase, sponsored by BBVA Compass , hosted by the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the SEA. Over 30 Social Enterrise leaders exhibited their wares and service offerings.
The theme for this year's showcase is "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" - Four prize categories are:
Most Innovative, Most Likely to Succeed, Best Marriage of Mission and Money & Overall Sweetheart.
Winners will be announced on Friday.

Social Enterprise Alliance Announces San Francisco Bay Area Chapter

Washington, DC (Oct 23, 2009) - The Social Enterprise Alliance, a national association representing the growing number of social enterprises across the country, has named its fourth local chapter. The SEA-San Francisco Chapter will host learning and networking opportunities among social enterprises, foundations, lenders, educators and technical assistance providers in the Bay Area to foster a robust sector of organizations using business strategies for generating social and environmental value.

The Social Enterprise Alliance's Summit, now in its 11th year, annually convenes over 500 enterprising leaders for training on the nuts and bolts of planning and operating a social enterprise. The 2010 Summit will be held in San Francisco, April 28-30, and will also host the 3rd Social Enterprise World Forum. SEA launched its chapter program in 2008 to provide peer networking and information exchange in local communities year-round.

"SEA chapters will help to accelerate social innovation in communities and spur the emergence of a robust local support system for social enterprise," says Social Enterprise Alliance President Kris Prendergast.

The SEA-San Francisco Bay Area Chapter will offer public programs three times per year on social enterprise topics, and provide local SEA members with opportunities to connect with each other in person and online throughout the year.

Growing in numbers, social enterprises harness the strength of marketplace practices with the values and objectives of the social sector to address some of society's most pressing social problems. With the tightening of the economy and its ripple effects, today's social enterprises are more important than ever to sustain vital human and employment services, youth development, environmental quality, and other public benefit programs.
